How it works

You show a card. You pay the lower price. That is the whole mechanism.

There is no claim to submit, no reimbursement to chase and no approval to wait for. The discount is applied at the counter, on the day, by the provider — because they have already agreed the rate.

Start to finish

Five stages, and three of them happen once

1

Choose a plan and join

Four plans, from three categories up to seventeen. Patricia works out which one fits what you already spend on, and will tell you if the smallest one is the honest answer.

2

Your member card is posted

It arrives within ten business days and works from the day it lands. There is nothing to activate and no app you are required to install.

3

Find somewhere that takes it

The networks are large and ordinary — 60,000 pharmacies, 262,000 dental providers, 20,000 vision, 1,500 labs. In most cases the place you already use is in one of them.

If a provider you rely on is not in the network, that is worth knowing before you join rather than after. Ask, and you will get a straight answer.
4

Show the card at the counter

Before you pay, not after. The provider looks up the negotiated rate and charges you that instead of the retail price.

5

Then do it again

The membership is only worth what you use it for. A card that sits in a drawer saves nobody anything — the households who do well out of this are the ones who use it for the ordinary, repeating things.

At the counter

What that actually looks like

The exchange takes about as long as handing over any other card.

You
  • Say you have a discount membership before they ring it up
  • Hand over the card, or read the member number from it
  • Pay the price they quote you back
The provider
  • Looks up the rate that has already been agreed
  • Applies it to what you are buying that day
  • Charges you the lower figure, then and there
What never happens

Four things you will not have to do

File a claim

There is nothing to submit, because nothing is being reimbursed. The price is lower at the point of sale.

Wait for approval

No pre-authorization, no coverage decision, nobody deciding whether you may proceed.

Meet a deductible

There isn’t one. The discount applies from the first time you use the card.

Answer health questions

There is no underwriting and no medical history. Existing conditions do not affect what you pay or what you can use.

Alongside insurance

It is an addition, not an alternative

This is not insurance and it does not replace it. Nobody pays a provider on your behalf, and there is no policy behind it. What you are buying is access to rates that have already been negotiated.

That makes it useful in the places insurance tends to leave you exposed — what you pay before a deductible is met, the categories a plan excludes outright, and the everyday things nobody claims for anyway. If you are insured, keep the insurance and use this beside it.

Worth it or not

The only question left is whether the math works for you.

Tell us what you spend on in a normal year and which state you are in. If a plan pays for itself you will hear which one, and if none of them do, you will hear that.

See what it would save you

About five minutes. Nothing to fill in.
